Can Regenerative Agriculture Put Better Food On the Table?

Regenerative agriculture is often discussed in terms of healthier soils, stronger ecosystems, and more resilient farming systems. But there is another question that matters just as much: can regenerative agriculture actually help families eat better?

A recent study of smallholder farmers in Kenya explores exactly that question, looking at 949 households across Makueni and Kirinyaga Counties. The researchers examined whether regenerative agriculture was associated with better household diets and whether it mattered how farmers learned about and adopted these practices.

From the Farm to the Dinner Table

Households implementing regenerative agriculture generally had more diverse diets than those who were not implementing it, was the clear pattern found from the study. Farmers who learned through formal NGO or partner training had more diverse diets and higher food consumption scores. Interestingly, farmers who adopted regenerative practices through farmer-to-farmer learning also showed better dietary diversity.

This is particularly important because the study found no significant difference between the outcomes of farmers trained directly by NGOs and those who learned from their peers. In other words, knowledge does not necessarily have to come from a formal training programme to make a difference. One of the most interesting findings is that regenerative agriculture did not appear to improve diets simply because households had more money to spend on food. Food expenditure did not differ significantly between the groups. Instead, the qualitative evidence points towards two other mechanisms.

Regenerative agriculture encouraged production diversification. Farmers reported growing a wider range of crops, fruits, vegetables and indigenous foods, while also keeping more diverse livestock. Households were able to rely more on their own production. Rather than purchasing all of their food from markets, farmers could consume a greater share of what they produced themselves. The nutritional benefits may come less from increased purchasing power and more from having a wider variety of food available directly on the farm.

What Does This Mean?

The study does not suggest that regenerative agriculture automatically solves household food insecurity. Instead, it provides evidence of an important association between regenerative agriculture implementation and better dietary diversity. The findings also highlight why agricultural programmes should look beyond yields and income. A farming practice can affect what ends up on a family’s dinner table, not only what is sold at the market. The research points to a simple but powerful idea: sometimes improving nutrition starts with changing what is grown, not simply increasing what can be bought.

As regenerative agriculture continues to gain attention, tracking its nutritional effects alongside environmental and economic outcomes could provide a much more complete picture of its potential for smallholder communities.
