Celebrating Science and Action: Tropentag 2025 Officially Opens in Bonn

The University of Bonn was alive with energy today as Tropentag 2025 officially opened, welcoming researchers, students, policymakers, and practitioners from around the globe. This year’s theme, “Reconciling Land System Changes with Planetary Health,” calls for urgent reflection on how land use can be managed to ensure food security while protecting ecosystems and human well-being.

Prof. Dr. Mathias Becker set the tone in his opening address, reminding participants that “land system changes are critical to the food security challenge.” He urged the audience to understand land systems as part of a wider planetary health framework, stressing that science must provide actionable solutions to navigate rapid and ongoing land transformations. Prof. Dr. Michael Hoch, Rector of the University of Bonn, welcomed participants and highlighted the university’s role as a hub for global sustainability research and collaboration. His remarks emphasized Bonn’s commitment to innovation, international exchange, and knowledge partnerships.

Prof. Dr. Folkard Asch of ATSAF added further insight, focusing on the practice and communication of science and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. He highlighted that engaging across disciplines and sectors is now more necessary than ever to address complex food system challenges. Prof. Asch also introduced the Tropentag 2025 student reporters, who will capture key discussions and share them widely throughout the conference.

The ceremony concluded with a celebration of excellence. The Hans H. Ruthenberg-Graduate Award 2025 was presented to Ms. Chiara Masser (far left), Ms. Simone Martina (middle), and Mr. Gabriel (far right), while the Justus von Liebig Award for World Nutrition went to Dr. Sunday Ekesi for his pioneering contributions to sustainable nutrition. With its combination of inspiring speeches, collaboration, and recognition, the opening set the stage for three days of vibrant discussion and action-oriented learning in Bonn.
